First case of Acute Flaccid Myelitis confirmed in Michigan

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed a case of acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) in a Michigan child.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says it was notified by the CDC about the case Wednesday. The child is from Wayne County.

Health officials are investigating seven suspected cases of AFM in Michigan.

So far this year, the CDC has confirmed 134 cases of AFM in 33 states. Most of those diagnosed are children.

AFM is a rare condition which affects the nervous system. It can weaken a person’s muscles and reflexes.
