Why We Vaccinate

Why We Vaccinate: Michigan Winters

When I found out we were expecting a winter baby, I’ll admit I was a little nervous. Wintertime can feel dark, chilly, and never ending in Michigan. It is also peak season for the flu.

As a mama who works full time outside the home, this also meant sending my kids back to daycare this month. One way I keep them protected from winter germs and sickness is by choosing to vaccinate. While a flu vaccine doesn’t promise you won’t ever get sick (they are in daycare, after all!) it does mean any sickness should be less severe. Vaccines are safe, effective, and help protect everyone. This is one small way we choose to protect our kids and love our community.

Why We Vaccinate: Infant Health

Spending so much time inside during these months can be difficult. It can also be a breeding ground for germs and illness. Having an infant in daycare has its challenges, especially with their little immune systems. While we aren’t able to vaccinate for the flu until 6 months, I was able to receive the flu vaccine during pregnancy. This decision provides protection for myself as well as my daughter Sloane for several months after birth!

Why We Vaccinate: Preventable Diseases
Vaccines protect our children and teens from 16 vaccine preventable diseases. This includes HPV, which can cause six types of cancer. As a sales rep, I work with OBGYN’s and gynecology oncologists throughout Michigan to help detect ovarian cancer in its earliest stages. Knowing this fact motivates me every day, both professionally and personally.

As a parent, we make choices for our children, big and small, every day. Choosing to vaccinate our growing family is a decision I make confidently and easily! Having questions is normal, and part of being a good parent.
