Michigan is one of several states that is in the high-risk category when it comes to flu cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Staff with Munson Healthcare said they are seeing an increase in outpatient cases for the flu across all ages.

This year, sore throat, coughing and fever are the most common reported symptoms for those with the flu.

“Last week, if you looked at every test that we did for influenza, so anybody that came in with symptoms that might be influenza, one out of four people tested positive for influenza and that number is considered really high for us,” said Dr. Joe Santangelo.

If that number gets above 10 percent, we start to think it’s a little bit high. We crept above 12 percent maybe back in December. So, for that number to 25 or 26 percent which is what it was last week is really high,” said Dr. Joe Santangelo.

Dr. Santangelo said there are about 20 patients reported with influenza that are hospitalized across Munson hospitals.

He said the best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get vaccinated every year.
