Federal health officials are warning that measles cases could increase in the coming months as spring and summer travel ramps up and large gatherings become more common.
In new guidance issued this week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said additional cases are expected amid ongoing transmission in parts of North America and increased travel activity.
Nationwide, nearly 1,800 measles cases have been reported, according to broadcast reports. Nearly 1,000 of those were linked to an outbreak in South Carolina, which officials say has now ended and was the largest in 35 years.
In California, 46 cases have been confirmed so far this year.
Health experts say the highly contagious virus can spread quickly through coughing or close contact, particularly in areas with lower vaccination rates. The CDC is urging health departments to remain vigilant, quickly report suspected cases and expand outreach to under-vaccinated communities.
Officials also emphasize that vaccination remains the most effective protection against measles, especially ahead of travel.
Symptoms can include high fever, rash, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes. The CDC warns the illness can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia or brain swelling in some cases.
Experts say anyone who believes they may have been exposed should contact a healthcare provider as soon as possible.
