Community Immunity: National Infant Immunization Week

We are so grateful to Dana of House of Navy for sharing why she chooses to vaccinate her children. Read more here!

In Michigan, we have finally reached the time of year where the weather starts to turn. You can both feel and smell the changing of the seasons and a shift toward summer. If you’re anything like our family, this time of year has you eager to Spring clean, spend time outside, and check projects off your to do list. One of the big projects on my to do list has been to focus on keeping up with Leo, Warren, and Sloane’s well child visits and routinely recommended vaccinations. This can be a big task, especially with all their different ages.

Start them Young

Now through April 30, it is National Infant Immunization Week! National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW) highlights the importance of protecting infants and young children from vaccine-preventable diseases. I have Sloane’s six month visit scheduled in just a few weeks where she will be eligible and recommended for several immunizations, including the flu vaccine. Giving babies the recommended vaccinations by age two is the best way to protect them from 14 serious childhood diseases, like whooping cough (pertussis) and measles.

Stay on Track

The past few years have caused many disruptions in families’ lives and in some cases, it has meant that children have missed or delayed their wellness checkups or scheduled vaccinations. These are a critical part of ensuring children stay healthy.

Two weeks ago, I took Leo and Warren for their 5 year and 3 year wellness visits. During our appointment, we were able to track the boys’ growth charts, review milestone markers, discuss scheduled vaccinations with our pediatrician, and ask questions.

Open the Conversation & Ask Questions

Vaccines are among the most successful and cost-effective public health tools available and benefit the entire community. Our family feels a sense of pride in sharing the responsibility to keep everyone safe and healthy. It is also a great way for us to show how we love and care for others.

As a parent, having the trusted guidance of our pediatrician and the medical community along with data driven results is so important. It gives me confidence I am making the right decision for our family to keep my kids safe and healthy to the best of my ability.

This week during National Infant Immunization Week, I’d like to challenge other mamas, both new and seasoned, to reach out to your pediatrician to make sure your immunizations are on track, or schedule a visit to get up to date if needed!
