Flu hits Texas early and hard

The sounds of the season are sprinkled with sniffles, snuffles and snorts. All that hacking this early, before the end of the year, portends a potentially ferocious flu season, physicians and public health officials said this week.

Already, Southeast Texas is seeing a high incidence of the bug. Beaumont-Port Arthur region ranked third in the country for flu activity for the week ending Dec. 16, according to Walgreens’ Flu Index, which measures prescriptions for anti-viral medications.

Texas has the highest flu activity this season, with seven areas included in the top 10.

The same week Southeast Texas ranked third, 81 people were tested for influenza at the emergency room at Beaumont’s Baptist Hospital, a dramatic spike from the five people the year before, according to Deborah Marciniak, director of infection prevention.

Recommended Immunization Schedules

These schedules list the age or age range when each vaccine or series of shots is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). If your child (birth through 6 years old) or adolescent (age 7 through 18 years old) has missed any shots, talk to your child’s doctor about getting back on track.

Michigan School & Childcare Immunization Requirements

Request your child’s immunization record

The Michigan Care Improvement Registry (MCIR), is an immunization registry managed by MDHHS and reported to by immunization providers. MCIR allows healthcare providers or individuals to access their immunization records regardless of their location in Michigan. This system also helps to track local and state immunization rates of Michigan residents to ensure immunity to vaccine-preventable illnesses. MCIR is a lifespan registry that includes infant through adult records.
