DETROIT (WWJ) – Developing on the health beat: The flu is ramping up in Michigan.
Lynn Sutfin, with the Michigan Department of Health, says cases of the flu are on the rise across the state.
“We’ve seen some increases in a couple different parts of the state, particularly the southeast and southwest regions of the state,” she said. “The flu is definitely here in Michigan as it is across the country.”
The flu is a contagious respiratory disease caused by different strains of the influenza virus and can result in mild to severe illness.
The CDC urges everyone six months of age and older to get a seasonal flu vaccine. Sutfin said the vaccine is the best way to prevent against getting the flu and can also reduce the severity of flu illness.
“It is not too late to get your flu vaccine. We are urging everyone,” she said. “It is the best defense we have against the flu.”
Flu vaccines are available at many locations throughout Michigan, including doctor’s offices, pharmacies and local health departments.
