Mayor Mike Duggan wants to stick it to Detroiters — but only after taking the first poke.

Duggan, Chief Public Health Officer Denise Fair and Deputy Mayor Conrad Mallett Jr. got their flu shots as photographers captured the (mostly) pain-free moment at the mayor’s Wednesday briefing at Detroit Public Safety Headquarters.

Their point, so to speak, was that Detroiters should get flu shots to help ward off influenza and to help keep hospitals from getting overwhelmed if there is another surge in COVID-19 cases.

“It it comes up in November and December and the hospitals are already filled with flu patients, we’re going to have another crisis,” Duggan said before getting his shot.

Detroit is offering free flu shots at the city’s immunization clinic at 100 Mack Ave. Call 313-876-4667 to make an appointment. To find other clinics offering shots, visit www.detroitmi.gov/flushot

Fair said that on Oct. 14 city workers will begin administering flu shots at 21 shelters, 164 adult foster care facilities and 82 senior citizen homes. She expects the city to give more than 6,700 shots by Christmas.

“It’s the right thing for you, health-wise,” Duggan said. “It’s the right thing for the community.”
