Twelve new cases of measles have been confirmed this week in Oakland County, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services. Four were confirmed Tuesday and eight other cases were announced Monday.
That brings the total number of measles cases in Michigan this year to 34. All but one are in Oakland County. Wayne County reported a single case in March.
Those who have been infected with measles in Michigan range in age from 8 months to 63 years old, the MDHHS reports. The last time the state had this many measles cases was in 1991, when 65 cases were reported.
“Most of the cases so far have been in adults,” said Lynn Sutfin, a spokeswoman for the MDHHS, which highlights why it’s important to know your immunization status.
“If you feel you have been exposed to measles and are not protected, you should watch for symptoms and self-isolate if symptoms begin,” Sutfin said. “If symptoms persist and you potentially develop a rash, contact your health care provider and consult with them. Measles is extremely contagious so if you feel you may have measles you should isolate yourself from other individuals until you can confirm if you have measles or not.”
