Two additional pediatric influenza-related deaths have been reported in Nebraska.
According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, two pediatric influenza-related deaths have been reported in the state, adding to the total of three flu-related deaths this season.
Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have documented 20 children’s deaths due to flu during this flu season.
The Department has emphasized the early use of antiviral drugs, such as oseltamivir (commonly known as Tamiflu), for individuals with flu-like symptoms. Tamiflu is considered safe for infants as young as 2 weeks old and can effectively treat flu symptoms.
In addition to antiviral drugs, the Department has recommended several preventive measures to reduce the risk of flu and other winter illnesses.
These include frequent handwashing, avoiding contact with sick individuals, staying home when feeling unwell, and practicing good respiratory hygiene by covering coughs and sneezes. The Department also emphasizes the importance of healthy eating, adequate rest, and not smoking.
The CDC recommends the flu vaccine for everyone aged 6 months and older. Influenza vaccination has been shown to reduce flu-related illnesses, doctor’s visits, work and school absences, as well as flu-related hospitalizations and deaths.
According to the CDC, certain populations, including young children, older adults, pregnant women, individuals with chronic health conditions, and residents of long-term care facilities, are at greater risk for serious flu complications.
The Department encourages those individuals to consult their healthcare providers about receiving the flu vaccine and taking other precautions.
