New year means peak of flu season is on the horizon

CADILLAC — The holidays are done. Students are back at school. Northern Michigan is in the grips of winter. That also means the number of cases of influenza are likely about to start rising.

Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital Director of Quality, Safety and Risk Management Joanna Benchley said there are three things people can do to protect themselves, loved ones and co-workers from the flu.

First and foremost, Benchley said people need to be immunized if they haven’t received the vaccination and yes, it is still a viable option right now.

Second, Benchley said if you have flu-like symptoms you should stay home from school or work so as to not spread it to others.

Finally, good hand-washing etiquette will help to prevent the spread of the flu and keep you healthy.
