Plymouth restaurant worker diagnosed with hepatitis A

A case of hepatitis A in a food service worker at a Plymouth restaurant was confirmed this week.

The Wayne County Department of Health, Veterans and Community Wellness inspected the Omelette and Waffle Cafe at 580 Forest Ave. on Tuesday, it said in a news release. The restaurant is open for business and working with the health department during the investigation.

Health department staff vaccinated restaurant employees Tuesday. Customers who visited the restaurant between Aug. 17 and Sept. 4 are advised to get vaccinated by Sept. 18 to prevent getting the disease.

The health department plans a vaccination clinic at Plymouth City Hall 8 a.m.-noon Saturday.

Hepatitis A is a vaccine preventable disease. If given within 14 days of exposure, the vaccine or immunoglobulin can prevent illness. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark urine, clay-colored stool, fever, chills, yellow skin and eyes (jaundice). Symptoms typically occur 15-50 days after exposure.

Since the beginning of the outbreak in Michigan in August 2016 through Sept. 5, there have been 886 cases reported, including 28 deaths, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
