Medical providers in Delta and Menominee counties are seeing the rate of Influenza cases rise.

Public Health Delta and Menominee Medical Director Robert Yin said cases peaked last month and he is concerned there may be a resurgence.

“Currently, in Michigan overall, we’re starting to come up to those numbers again,” Yin said. “It’s not clear if we’re going to have a late peak in the season, which is going to exceed those numbers, in late January or December.”

Yin says hospitals and clinics in Delta and Menominee counties have one to two COVID-19 cases a day and only one pediatric and one adult case of RSV a week.

Western Upper Peninsula Health Department Health Officer Kate Beer explained Covid and RSV cases have dipped across the U.P.

Beer said Influenza has been much more prevalent.

“Last year, at the same time, the flu levels were actually minimal to low,” Beer said. “So, we are seeing an insurgence in flu this year.”

When it comes to prevention, Yin said this shouldn’t be new information.

“Try and avoid close contact with people who have the disease,” Yin explained. “It’s reasonable to mask if you have it, or if you’re over the age of 60 you might want to mask when you’re outside.”

Yin and Beer both said it’s not too late to get vaccinated for RSV, COVID or Influenza.
