We’re so grateful to Damarqio of Detroit Father for partnering with us to share his story. Read his full blog post here.
As a father and community organizer focused on supporting families through policy advocacy, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is for parents to have access to reliable, science-based information about their children’s health. That’s why I’m proud to partner with I Vaccinate to share my story and spread awareness about the crucial role of vaccinations in protecting our kids and our community.
The Power of Informed Decisions
Being a parent means making countless decisions for our children’s well-being. When it comes to vaccinations, it’s natural to have questions – in fact, it makes you a good parent! But in today’s world of information overload, finding trustworthy answers can be challenging.
This is where I Vaccinate shines. They provide Michigan parents with tools and information based on real medical science and research. Their goal isn’t to shame or pressure but to empower parents with facts so we can make informed choices for our families.
Why Vaccinations Matter to Me
As a father, nothing is more important than keeping my children safe and healthy. Vaccines have been proven safe and effective in protecting against 16 preventable diseases. When I learned that vaccines can even protect against HPV, which can cause six types of cancer, I knew this was a vital part of safeguarding my children’s future.
But it’s not just about my kids. As a community organizer, I understand the concept of community immunity. When we vaccinate our children, we’re also protecting those who can’t be vaccinated due to age or health conditions. It’s a powerful way to show care for our neighbors and build a healthier community for everyone.
Breaking the Silence
One thing that struck me about the I Vaccinate campaign is their emphasis on sharing real stories from parents like us. Too often, the conversation around vaccines is dominated by misinformation or framed as a debate, when in reality, the majority of parents do choose to vaccinate.
By speaking up about why we vaccinate, we can change the narrative. We can create an environment where other parents feel empowered to say, “I vaccinate,” and where science-based information rises above the noise.
A Call to Action for Fellow Parents
As we prepare for the school year, it’s the perfect time to focus on our children’s health and well-being. With Michigan’s vaccination rates at historic lows, it’s more crucial than ever to ensure our kids are protected against preventable diseases.
If you’re a parent with questions about vaccines, I encourage you to:
- Talk to your child’s doctor. They’re your best resource for personalized advice and can help you catch up on any missed vaccinations.
- Explore credible sources like IVaccinate.org for science-based information. Learn about the 16 vaccine-preventable diseases that we can protect our children from by age 18.
- Check your child’s school vaccination rates. You can download this information to understand the risks in your child’s school environment.
- Get your kids caught up on vaccines as soon as possible. Following the CDC-recommended immunization schedule is one of the safest and most effective ways to protect your children.
- Share your story. If you choose to vaccinate, consider speaking up about why. Your voice matters and can help create a supportive environment for other parents.
Remember, having questions doesn’t make you a bad parent – it makes you a concerned one. What’s important is seeking answers from reliable sources.
